A discussion of the Latino family is incomplete without recognition of the central role Latina women have played in both the family and the community.  Despite the stereotypical portrayal of Latinas as passive women, they have always been a source of strength for family members. They maintain and nurture strong familial ties and loyalty . . . . As grandmothers, mothers, and daughters, single, divorced, or married, they are the cornerstones of family life.
