Dear Harlandale families, friends and visitors, A grant has been given to the Harlandale community, The University of Missouri Kansas City, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) to conduct a 4 year research study on the effects of a violence prevention intervention. This study is called Familias en Accion. The goal of the study is to evaluate the effect of interventions on violent behaviors and attitudes among elementary students, families, and the Harlandale community. Below are some questions and answers that will help you better understand our study. How did Familias en Accion begin? Familias en Accion first began when community meetings were held to focus on a new community-partnered research project. Harlandale community members worked with UTHSCSA researchers to identify violence prevention as their topic of interest for a research project. Those who participated in the very first planning meetings agreed to form a Community Collaborative Council (CCC). The CCC is composed of Harlandale community residents, Harlandale Independent School District (HIS) staff, and community-based organizations such as JOVEN, SUAVE, and the American Indians of Texas-Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM). It was agreed that the CCC would serve as a working group and would represent the Harlandale community. The CCC works as a partner with the UTHSCSA research team to guide all components of the intervention plan, the evaluation and a long term plan for sustaining the partnership. The CCC will receive research training and project management from the research team. What is Familias en Accion testing? The effectiveness of the violence prevention curriculum on students, families, and the community is being tested. How will Familias en Accion be evaluated? Before the interventions are implemented, data-about violence-related activities are being collected among 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in the after-school Positive Beginnings in Youth program, their respective parents/guardians of thoses students, and residents of the Harlandale community via the use of surveys. To test the effectiveness of the program, post and follow-up surveys will be administered. The CCC is helping researchers to develop and administer the surveys. During the course of the study, the CCC will work with researchers to develop plans for sustaining the community-research partnership after the completion of the grant. What are the next steps for Familias? In the next few months, you and your family may be invited to participate in our study (if you are not already participating). We sincerely hope that you will be able to participate and make Familias en Accion a success for your community.
